Many of the current e-ticketing schemes with AFC are card centric. A passenger’s smart card plays a central role in the system, storing all of the data a terminal needs to authenticate the card.

With an ABT System, data is first stored on the card and terminals, and then moved to local and central back-office network storage. In an account-based system, the terminal only identifies and authenticates the card. Fare calculation and payment are completely carried out in the back end of a PTO, or in a central back-end system connecting multiple PTOs in an interoperable system. In this environment, a change in the fare calculation process, such as the addition of a bus stop or a price adjustment, eliminates the need for change in a PTO’s terminals or cards. This allows account-based systems to be much more flexible than an ABT system.

ABT systems also provide other significant benefits. Passengers can use contactless bank cards, student IDs, mobile phones or transit service-issued smart cards to pay for travel. The cost of fare collection is slashed, due to reduced transit card system management and infrastructure costs.
